Independent Study Program

Per the California Department of Education Assembly Bill 130 (AB 130), WUSD is required to provide an alternative to in-person classroom instruction for students whose health would be put at risk during the 2021-2022 school year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The alternative, known as the WUSD Independent Study Program, will take place via Zoom and other tools. The WUSD Independent Study Program is entirely separate from the WUSD in-person instructional program.

Program Description for the Independent Study Program

Students enrolled in the WUSD independent study program will:

  • Access online curriculum in all subjects through an online learning resource. Learning will be independent with support provided online based on grade level.
  • Kindergarten to grade 3: Participate in daily synchronous instruction* throughout the school year.
  • Grades 4 to 8: Participate in daily synchronous interaction* and weekly synchronous instruction** throughout the school year.
  • Commit to full semester(s) of independent study. This is to ensure appropriate staffing and to provide consistency for our student’s education. Please ensure that you carefully consider this choice due to the commitment. All students have the option to return to in-person instruction for the 2021-22 school year. If your student struggled with learning remotely, they should return to in-person instruction.

*“Synchronous interaction/instruction” means designated small group or one-on-one instruction in the form of internet or telephonic communications between the teacher or instructional aide and student(s).
