General Information and Safety

STUDENT SAFETY

Please discuss with your children the importance of not accepting rides or even talking to strangers.  They should be walking to and from school with an adult.  Be sure your child knows how to cross streets safely. Also teach your children your home and work telephone numbers where you can be reached in an emergency.  If there is a change in a regular schedule, let the teacher and the school office know so your child knows what to do after school.  Students must never leave the school during school hours without permission from the office.  Students will be released only to those persons listed on the Emergency Information Card.  Make sure your child knows where he/she lives (address) and phone number.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

Double parking or parking in a red zone is a traffic violation.  It is extremely important that you and your child use the crosswalks when crossing 135th Street - rather than crossing in the middle of the street (jaywalking).

BICYCLES

Students can ride their bicycle to school and use our bike racks on campus. We have two bike rack locations.  One is in our Kindergarten area and another one near the library for our first and second grade students.  Students who ride their bike to school are required to wear a helmet and walk their bike while on campus.  Happy riding!
 

Pick-Up and Drop-Off Procedures

VALET SERVICE

Each morning and afternoon, school staff “valets” will be in the parking lot to assist you as you drop off and pick up your children.  Please use the valet line only for drop off and pick-up from your car.  As always, staff members will be keeping the valet line moving to help facilitate a quicker drop off and pick-up for everyone.  If your child is not available for pick-up, you will be told to make another loop in the line or find a legal place to park your car.  Your cooperation and cheerfulness in the valet line is appreciated and will ensure your child’s safety.  Please remember the red zone is for loading and unloading only, not for parking.  It must remain clear for emergency vehicles.  
**Please note that the valet option for TK/Kindergarten is only available in the morning, not at dismissal in the afternoon.  This is to best ensure student safey.

General Procedures for everyone:

• Drivers should not get out of the car.
• Children should enter, exit car only from the passenger/curbside.  If your child is unable to get out of the car by him/herself, please park in the lot.
• Have backpacks zipped up and ready to go.  Do not place in trunk.
• Before you arrive in drop-off lane, your child should be finished with breakfast foods, have hair combed, coats buttoned and shoes tied, and goodbyes and great day wishes exchanged.
• Remind your child to be watching for your car and ready to go at pick-up time.
• Please help us model safe and polite behavior for our children.

Pick-up Locations by Grade Level:
To help prevent traffic congestion, our grade levels are dismissed from different locations:

TK/K: Kindergarten quad gates (your student’s teacher will let you know which of the three gates each class will use)
1st Grade: Cabrillo main entrance
2nd Grade: 134th St. Gate, near blacktop

Parking

From 8:00-3:00 the school parking lot is designated for staff only. There are designated visitor spaces for up to 20 minutes near the office and Right At School.

Please park on our surrounding streets or feel free to have your child ride their bicycles to school. Be aware that on Glasgow there is no parking on Monday on the east side of the street from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and on Thursday on the west side of street from 8:00–11:00 a.m.

Also be aware there are two lanes as you pull into the parking lot.  The right lane (closest to curb) is for valet only, not a parking lane.  The left lane is for driving through only.  As you exit the parking lot, the right lane is to turn right; the left lane is to turn left onto 135th Street.

Please remember that the red curb area in the parking lot is only for valet student drop off and pick up.  You may not park your car in this area.  You will be asked to move your car if you arrive early and park.

Rainy Day Procedures

To keep our children dry during rainy days, we have the following before and after school plan.

Rainy Day Before School
Kindergarten

• Raincoats with hoods are encouraged as opposed to umbrellas, as a matter of student safety.  
• Children stand under the awning by their classroom until open.

1st and 2nd Grade

• 1st and 2nd grade go directly to their classroom.
• Students will have indoor recess time until 8:30, when class will begin.

Rainy Day Dismissal
If rainy weather is expected, please send your child to school with a raincoat and/or umbrella.  In the event of extreme weather, please stay tuned to your email for any emergency messages from the school site.

If you would like to purchase supplies for your student and their class, please refer to the recommended lists below.  While all necessary supplies are provided for all students by Cabrillo, we always appreciate supplies sent from home.

Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, from 6-7:30 p.m.   This event is for parents and caregivers only, and it is designed to inform grown-ups about school events and what your student will be learning this year.  An open association PTA meeting begins the evening in our PAC (multipurpose room) from 6-6:30, and this is followed by a presentation from your student’s teacher in their classroom.  We look forward to seeing you on this important night!

Weekly Newsletter: Throughout the school year a weekly school newsletter will be sent to your email every Thursday evening.  Please take a few minutes each week to review the important information on upcoming news and events that the newsletter contains.

Both breakfast and lunch are available to all students at no cost to families.  Please click the link below for information on menu options.

Our gates will open each morning at 8 a.m.   Our 1st and 2nd grade students will be served breakfast from 8-8:20 a.m., and our TK/kindergarten students will be served breakfast from 8-8:35 a.m.  Students who finish eating quickly will have time for supervised play during any remaining time before school begins. 

If your student has any food allergies, please be sure that you include this information in your registration form responses and that you notify your student’s teacher.  Thank you!

Wiseburn Education Foundation (WEF) is a community-based, volunteer organization focused on raising funds to support programs that allow our students to learn in a STEAM-rich environment.
